“Born here” cider apples

These days, apples in America are grown almost entirely for eating. Yet before Prohibition, many varietals were grown primarily for cider. This part of our lineup showcases North American, cider-specific apples that thrive in our region – and present beautifully in the glass. Look for these in select PNW grocery stores, bottle shops, at our downtown Spokane taproom, or purchase online

Golden Russet

Discovered between 1800 and 1850, Golden Russets may resemble potatoes (due to their bronze-hued, russeted skins), but they’re one of America’s best cider apples. This single-varietal cider expresses classic jackfruit and nutmeg flavors. Oh, and crazy-high ABV courtesy Yakima Valley soil and sunshine. A 2021 Good Food Awards™ Winner and 2024 Finalist!

Suggested pairings

Pork, figs, honey and goat cheese, or charcuterie.

Virginia Crab

Virginia Crab (a.k.a. Hewe’s Crab) is a true American classic, borne of native crabapples and an undetermined European varietal. Washington and Jefferson were fans – as were most cider-drinking Americans – until Prohibition made them rare. This single-varietal cider aims to revive Virginia Crab’s fame, expressing rich, full-bodied tropical fruit aromas and flavors. A 2024 Good Food Awards™ Winner!

Pork, figs, honey and chèvre, or charcuterie.

Wickson Crabapple

Patented in 1944 by famed pomologist Albert Etter, Wickson Crabapples are among a very few cider varietals developed in post-Prohibition America. This stellar example presents grape, pineapple, lychee and honey notes, with a white pepper and mildly tannic finish.

Suggested pairings

Enjoy on its own or with pork, figs, honey and goat cheese, or charcuterie.

Developed in the late 1800s, Columbia Crabapples were bred to survive harsh Canadian winters. Ours – grown in the warm Yakima Valley – yield a cider offering honeysuckle aromas and rich flavors including Meyer lemon, honey and buttercream. Crisp and refreshing!

Suggested pairings

Enjoy on its own, or with charcuterie and chèvre; apple-glazed pork; or baked brie.
